Rodin Museum

Located at 77 rue de Varenne in Paris, the Rodin Museum is dedicated to the work of the great sculptor Auguste Rodin. The museum has also hosted many celebrated artists, including Isadora Duncan, Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau, and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Inside the building, you'll find a collection of nearly 7,000 sculptures, 8,000 drawings and photographs, and 7,000 other assorted objects belonging to the artist or born of his genius. The Rodin Museum is also a favorite among visitors to Paris because it sits in one of the quietest corners of the city.

Highlights

The Thinker

The Thinker is a famous bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin, displayed at the back of the museum in the garden. It depicts a man deep in thought. The Thinker is sometimes used to represent philosophy itself.

The Kiss

The Kiss is a sculpture by Rodin immortalizing the quintessential lovers Paolo and Francesca. Francesca was the daughter of the lord of Ravenna, Guido da Polenta, and after 1275 she married the deformed son of the lord of Rimini, Gianciotto Malatesta. Paolo was Gianciotto's brother and served as captain of the people in Florence. The two carried on a secret affair and, caught together by Francesca's husband, were both killed. This sculpture is one of Rodin's best-known works.

The Rodin Museum garden

Benches and relaxing chairs are available at the back of the museum garden. From there, you'll enjoy an unobstructed view of the dome of Les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower.

Tips

If you're on a tight budget, a ticket for the garden alone is well worth it. The garden ticket is inexpensive and already lets you discover plenty of beautiful things about Auguste Rodin's art. The garden ticket costs between 2 and 4 euros.

How to get there

You can reach the Rodin Museum by metro, line 13 to the "Varenne" station, or line 13 or line 8 to the "Invalides" station. You can also get there on buses 69, 82, 87, and 92.
