Sainte-Chapelle

Just a few steps from Notre-Dame de Paris, tucked away within the grounds of the Palais de Justice, stands the Sainte-Chapelle. This small chapel was built on the Île de la Cité in the 12th century at the request of Saint Louis. Overlooked by many tourists in favor of Notre-Dame, the Sainte-Chapelle is a true masterpiece of Gothic art.

The stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle

The stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle are a true marvel. The upper chapel contains 600 square meters of stained glass, up to 15 meters high, most of it original. The windows are meant to be read from left to right and bottom to top: from the beginning of the Old Testament up to the rose window depicting the Apocalypse.

The Conciergerie

Built in the 14th century at the request of King Philip the Fair, the Conciergerie stands on the Quai de l'Horloge, right next to the Sainte-Chapelle. The palace was almost entirely converted into a prison over the course of the 15th century: you can visit, among other things, Marie-Antoinette's cell.

The Île de la Cité

The Île de la Cité, known as "Lutetia" under the Romans, is considered the "ancient cradle of the city of Paris." Ten bridges provide access to it, including the Pont Neuf and the famous Pont des Arts. Here you can also admire Notre-Dame Cathedral. Not far away, on Rue Aubé, the Marché aux Fleurs flower market is sure to delight you.
